One example of this ambition is Michele Funiciello, a leader and mentor in the pharmaceutical industry whose journey from a close-knit family upbringing to becoming a Senior Executive Pharmaceutical Specialist at AstraZeneca is nothing short of inspiring.
Familial Roots and Unconventional Pathways
Michele’s journey began in a small upstate New York town, surrounded by the warmth of her seven siblings. Growing up in a large family, she embodied values of community service, kindness, and hard work at an early age. With her dad as the town mayor for nearly 20 years, she always saw her parents doing everything they could to be involved with the community through many non-profits, inspiring her to do the same when she was older. As the youngest sister of her family, she developed a strong support system that continues to be a cornerstone of her life. These foundational values laid the groundwork for her future success and commitment to making a difference.
Her educational journey took her to Siena College, a liberal arts school in New York, where she studied International Marketing, paving the way for a diverse range of opportunities. Post-graduation, she ended up teaching tennis in Killington, VT—a beloved hobby that would later shape her career. Through a series of connections at the tennis academy, Michele found herself applying for a sales position at AstraZeneca. She soon secured the role and embarked on a journey that has spanned over 32 years.
For over three decades, Michele has had a significant impact at AstraZeneca. Starting as a sales representative, she worked her way up to her current role as a Senior Executive Pharmaceutical Specialist. For the majority of her tenure, she worked in the hospital division, and recently switched over to be a part of the Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic (CVRM) specialty team. After 20 years as a Senior Executive Specialist, Michele has launched a diverse range of medications to health care providers.
Michele attributes her success to staying true to her roots and drawing inspiration from the lessons her parents taught her as a child. Her commitment to AstraZeneca’s values has certainly not gone unnoticed. In 2015, she received the Circle of Excellence award, a company-wide program that pays testament to outstanding employees and their contributions to the brand.

Empowering Women and Enriching the Community
Beyond her exemplary professional achievements, Michele's impact extends to her community and the empowerment of women. She played a role in developing the Network of Women at AstraZeneca, which helped to create a platform for AstraZeneca employees to share insights, experiences, and guidance. This initiative stands as a shining example of Michele's dedication to collaboration and growth.
Her commitment to community service is further exemplified by her involvement in the Sponsor a Scholar program and the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. As a board member of Sponsor a Scholar, Michele advocates for educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged youth. Meanwhile, her role in the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation spotlights her dedication to protecting the town's historical legacy amidst its growth.
“I fell in love with our community’s architecture and wanted to do my part to ensure these important buildings, that are such an important part of our heritage, were protected and preserved,” Michele explained.
Michele and her husband, Dieter, restored a historic 12-bedroom building, now functioning as a seasonal bed and breakfast, which showcases her passion for preserving heritage architecture. Through these efforts, Michele was named one of Saratoga County’s Women of Influence in 2022 and continues to improve her town in every way possible.
Balancing Success and Passion
Amidst her successful career, Michele's life extends beyond AstraZeneca and community service. She loves playing tennis and exploring nature with her rescue dog, Emma, at the beautiful Saratoga Springs State Park. These moments offer a glimpse into her life, one that thrives on professional accomplishment, community enrichment, and personal fulfillment.

My biggest achievement at AstraZeneca is feeling proud of what I’ve accomplished. All these years, I feel like I have remained authentic to myself, and I get to make an impact on all our patients and their families’ lives.
