A Surprising Journey
Colby Flint's career in the pharmaceutical industry was not something he envisioned when he first embarked on his professional journey. After graduating from Brigham Young University - Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in economics, Colby began his career working in market research for the entertainment industry. During this time, he discovered his passion for data and analytics through survey work. Realizing the potential of data-driven insights, Colby decided to pursue higher education and earned his master’s degree in data analytics from The George Washington University.
After spending some time continuing to develop his career, Colby was presented with a unique opportunity during the pandemic. AstraZeneca was making significant strides in digital health solutions, and it seemed like a good match for his skillset.
Drawn by the potential of utilizing his data expertise to improve the patient experience, he joined AstraZeneca's Digital Health division in Gaithersburg, MD.
A Family and a Purpose
Amidst the professional achievements and milestones, Colby's personal life took a significant turn when his son was born with a rare medical disease in December 2020. The following months were filled with medical tests and visits to specialists. It was during this challenging period that Colby experienced firsthand the impact of rare diseases on patients and their families.
An unexpected moment of inspiration occurred when Alexion, AstraZeneca's rare disease unit, called for employees to share their experiences with rare diseases to help raise awareness. Colby saw an opportunity to share his family's story and his passion for digital health. He reached out to the internal team that was collecting employee examples and shared his family’s experience, and it resonated within the organization, leading to a call from the Alexion Innovation Accelerator program.
Bridging Data and Patient Solutions
Colby's unique experience parenting a child with a rare medical condition provided invaluable insights into the perspective of patients and caregivers. Empowered by these new perspectives, he embarked on a journey with Alexion’s Innovation Accelerator program to make a meaningful difference for patients impacted by rare diseases. In his current role on the Digital Health team, Colby typically focuses on data from digital patient solutions, primarily mobile applications that enhance patient participation in clinical trials and streamline communication with healthcare providers.
With the opportunities in his current role and his involvement with the Innovation Accelerator program, Colby works to make the patient experience for rare diseases more efficient than ever. By putting patients first, Colby exemplifies the core values of AstraZeneca, where improving patient experiences and outcomes is at the heart of our mission.
I’m really glad to be in this industry because I think it helps me to both learn about and contribute to the healthcare system. It also helps me to ask better questions for my son.
