Leading with purpose: Celebrating Haley Boyker, 2026 Step Ahead Award winner
“I sought out a career in pharmaceutical manufacturing to help people,” says Haley Boyker, Director, On Market Technical in Coppell, Texas.
Boyker has made a career in pharmaceutical manufacturing with one goal in mind: making a meaningful difference for patients. “Whether they’re facing hardship , or simply looking for a better quality of life… it all comes back to the patient.”
That unwavering sense of purpose, combined with her leadership and impact, is what earned Haley recognition as a 2026 Step Ahead Award winner—a well-deserved honor that celebrates both her technical expertise and the way she leads people.
A journey grounded in curiosity and purpose
Haley’s path to AstraZeneca began early, driven by a love of math and science and a clear desire to work in healthcare. While studying chemical engineering, she visited an AstraZeneca manufacturing site—an experience that would shape her future.
“I could tell that the culture of the company was something that aligned with my values and ambitions, and the patient was at the center of everything the company strived for.”
Following an internship at the Gaithersburg site, she joined AstraZeneca and has now spent nearly eight years growing her career, continuously expanding her impact.
Today, she leads a multidisciplinary technical team supporting drug substance manufacturing, process optimization, and lifecycle management.
I feel that purpose by enabling the people I work with to do their best, work safely, and be supported by processes that allow us to manufacture medicine effectively.
Leading teams—and learning along the way
Haley’s leadership approach has been shaped not only by successes, but also by the lessons she’s embraced along the way. One early career experience in updating operating procedures reinforced a mindset she carries to this day.
“That experience has stayed with me as an invaluable reminder to always do my due diligence… think about the end users, consider multiple angles, and engage with stakeholders.”
It’s a philosophy grounded in listening, learning, and continuous improvement—one that has helped her build trust and empower the teams she leads.
At the heart of her work is enabling others to succeed. “I feel that purpose by enabling the people I work with to do their best, work safely, and be supported by processes that allow us to manufacture medicine effectively.”
Living AstraZeneca’s values every day
For Haley, AstraZeneca’s value of “We do the right thing” stands above all.
“Doing the right thing means operating honestly… ensuring the medicine we supply is made with integrity at every step.”
This commitment shows up in her decision-making—prioritizing safety, quality, and people, and ensuring the right outcomes for both patients and teams.
Her impact extends beyond the plant as well. Haley is passionate about inspiring the next generation, regularly hosting students at the Coppell site to showcase careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to bring visibility and awareness of possibilities to people who might still be figuring out their path.”
Life beyond the workplace
Outside of work, Haley enjoys an active lifestyle and soaking in sunshine.
Whether it’s kickboxing, a round of disc golf, or relaxing at the lake on a sunny weekend, she values time to recharge and reset.
She also enjoys traveling, tackling home projects, and spending time with loved ones, including her husband and their golden retriever, Addy.
The same sense of energy and balance is carried through both her personal and work life.
