AstraZeneca sponsors 2009 Summer National Senior Games

Six AstraZeneca athletes to compete in games

August 3, 2009 – Palo Alto, CA – AstraZeneca (NYSE:AZN) today joined over 10,000 athletes, the National Senior Games Association and other sponsors to kick off two weeks of competition at the 2009 National Summer Senior Games.  As a global healthcare company dedicated to providing more than life-changing medicines, AstraZeneca’s Gold Medal sponsorship of the Senior Games aligns with AstraZeneca’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of people of all ages.  

From August 1-15, adults 50 years of age and older will compete in a total of 25 sports. Six AstraZeneca employees are competing in this year’s Games in a variety of sports, including track, table tennis, swimming, volleyball, cycling and archery.

Major events include: the Flame Arrival Ceremony and Celebration of Athletes, both presented by AstraZeneca and include remarks by AstraZeneca executives David Nicoli, VP Corporate Affairs, and John McCarthy, VP Commercial Strategy & Operations, respectively.  At the Games AstraZeneca is host of the Athlete Village, where athletes and fans can interact with AstraZeneca and other sponsors, as well as the AstraZeneca Cyber Café, where participants can check event results and catch up on e-mail.  AstraZeneca’s US AGAINST ATHERO Artery Explorer will also be on site August 1-9, to help educate attendees about atherosclerosis, via a virtual tour of the arteries.
