May 7, 2009 – Washington, DC – AstraZeneca Chief Executive Officer David Brennan said today that AstraZeneca and the pharmaceutical industry are prepared to work with the administration, Congress and patients to enact meaningful health care reform this year.
“Working together, we can – and I believe we will – get the right health care reform for patients,” said Brennan, the newly elected board chairman of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). “We can build an improved health care system in which more people are diagnosed and treated, fewer people are hospitalized, and medicines will be viewed as an investment, not a cost.”
In a speech to patient groups and congressional staff at an event organized by The Hill newspaper, Brennan called on his industry colleagues and all segments of the health care system to work together in a new collaborative and bipartisan manner on meaningful health care reform that includes:
- Increased access to health care and prescription drug coverage for the uninsured and underinsured.
- Greater emphasis on disease prevention to reduce the burden of chronic diseases on individuals and the health care system as a whole.
- Reduced co-pays for prescription medicines to bring them more in line with what patients pay for other health services.
- Ensuring the Food and Drug Administration has the resources it needs to protect patients by effectively reviewing life-saving and enhancing medicines.
Brennan said a modernized health system should also protect intellectual property and promote innovation as scientists seek cures to the world’s deadliest and most debilitating illnesses.
